This guy had not a customer-service bone in his body. I understand not all backcountry shops can meet the refund standards of shops like REI . But I was asking for a refund of an unused/unopened purchase. Although I was happy that I had the opportunity to buy the filter, I felt wronged in the end, and very unhappy with Ridgway Outdoor Experience. I hope to never need their services again.
I was on my way to the San Juans to climb some peaks over the next 10 days or so, when it suddenly occurred to me I had left my backcountry water filter at home in Denver. Dang! I pulled into Ridgway Outdoor Experience and purchased one for $120. Unfortunately, I was later forced to change my hiking plans. I returned to the shop to request a refund for the unused & unopened water filter I had purchased less than 2 days before. The owner stated (in a wholly uncaring, abrupt manner), "no refunds, never, no way, store credit only." I pleaded my case to no avail. I found a pair of hiking shoes for $100 that I didn't really need. He stated I still had $20 more worth of credit, and asked if I was in town often, implying he could give me a $20 credit. I stated "no", I hardly ever come to Ridgway, and then he claimed he could not actually write me a $20 credit, it was not their policy. Good grief! He had just debunked his own statement about no refunds, credit only. Then he says, "Well, you've met me part way, I'll just give you 20 bucks back." If he could give a $20 refund, why could he not give a full refund?
Terrible experience! These other reviews are spot on. Little to no customer service. We waisted nearly an hour of our hiking/camping plans just waiting for them to open. The sign in the door, the web page and the phone machine all say they open at 9am. These lazy business owners did not open until 9:45. We were the first cusomers that day and already the store was a complete mess, I guess from they day before. In the future it will be worth it to drive to another town for our outdoor necessities.
The man workin here talked down to me from the time I walked in til I walked out of the store after he told me the raft I bought for my family was nothing more than a toy. Offensively rude and derogatory. Idk how this place is still open. The store was a mess with things everywhere and no organization. I will never be back.
We went to Ridgway Outdoor Experience and found it to be affordable with a great variety of maps, clothing, equipment ect... The service was excellent and helpful! I assume the person attending us was the owner. I really appreciate the time he took to tell me the little things about using his equipment. You can tell he knows his equipment and that means a lot to me. My family and I go to Ridgway 2 to 3 times a year and will definitely be going back!
Went in to buy some flies and the guy deliberately over-charged me. I grabbed a handful of flies (in a little plastic Dixie cup), went to the register, and he asked me how many were in the cup. I told him I wasn't sure, thinking he would truthfully count the number of flies I had given him. MISTAKE! He first said 5 and I said that sounded about right. Then he recounted, taking what was clearly a close look at the cup they were in and said there were 6. I honestly didn't know and that sounded close enough so I trusted him. When I got back to my campsite and pulled out the cup they were in I realized there were in fact only 5, almost immediately. Obviously we're talking about a difference of only a couple of dollars, but a lie is lie.
